Orthodontic Separators Guide and How to Care for Them
At I Song Orthodontics, some patients may need to wear orthodontic separators, also called spacers, before getting braces. These are small elastic bands placed between specific teeth to create enough space for metal bands to fit securely around your molars during the next stage of treatment.
Separators are typically worn for a few days to a week, and it’s important to follow care instructions closely to keep your treatment on track.
Key Instructions for Patients Wearing Separators:
- If a separator falls out, call our office to schedule a quick evaluation.
- Do not play with the separators using your fingers or tongue. This can loosen or dislodge them.
- Avoid flossing in the areas where separators are placed. You may continue brushing normally elsewhere.
- Avoid sticky or chewy foods like gum, caramel, or gummy candies, as they can pull the separators out.
- Mild discomfort or soreness is completely normal. You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever for relief.
Examples of Hard or Sticky Foods to Avoid:
- Gum and chewy candies
- Caramel and toffee
- Popcorn
- Ice
- Nuts
- Hard pretzels
- Sticky granola bars
These foods can either dislodge your orthodontic spacers or irritate your teeth and gums during this stage of treatment.
What to Expect for The Next Step
Braces may be strong, but they’re not indestructible. Certain foods can damage your brackets or wire and slow your progress.
